Korean Ginseng, also known as Panax Ginseng or “the man root”, is grown in China.  For thousands of years, the Chinese have used Korean Ginseng as a preventative treatment to stimulate and cultivate the body’s well being.  Korean Ginseng is credited with preventing and treating stress and fatigue as well as repairing the sexual center in the brain.  Korean Ginseng has thirteen ginsenosides including panaxans and polysaccharides.  Panaxans are responsible for lowering blood sugar levels and polysaccharides build the immune system.  The panax found in ginseng is recommended for use in treating type 2 diabetes.  Polysaccharides strengthen the body’s immune system which defends the body against diseases and stress related illnesses by activating the growth of disease fighting T-cells.

Ginseng is known as an adaptogen.  Adaptogens are compounds found in the body known to relieve stress.  Korean Ginseng supports the hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenal glands which are known to combat stress.  Korean Ginseng also stimulates endorphin production.  Endorphins are responsible for providing the body with euphoric sensations.  Korean Ginseng also targets the region of the brain that promotes sexual stimulation.  It increases testosterone levels and raises sperm count.  Korean Ginseng can be taken orally or by applying it to the body.  In the treatment of erectile dysfunction, male patients are treated by rubbing the medicinal product on their genitalia.  Studies show that by taking Korean Ginseng, male subjects reported an increase in sexual desire, the ability to obtain and maintain an erection and a higher sperm count.

In a Korean urology clinic, a study of forty-five men with an average age of fifty-four was conducted.  These men suffered from erectile dysfunction as defined as the lack of ability to obtain and maintain an erection necessary for satisfactory sexual performance.  Participants in the study were divided into two groups, those that received a placebo to treat their problem and those that were given Korean Red Ginseng to treat their erectile dysfunction.  The study lasted eight weeks wherein the participants were tested based on the blood flow in their penis, the size of their penis and the firmness.  The results showed that those who were treated with Korean Red Ginseng had improved levels of obtaining and maintaining an erection as well as an increased desire for sexual activity.  During the study testosterone levels were tested and results showed that those who consumed Korean Red Ginseng did not have increased levels of testosterone levels in their body.  As a conclusion from this finding, it is noted that Korean Red Ginseng does not affect hormones in the body but rather increases sexual ability by targeting the nervous system.
The recommended dose of Korean Ginseng for an adult age eighteen or older is one to two capsules of one hundred to two hundred milligrams daily.  This can be taken for a two-to-three week period.  It is suggested that people who take ginseng on a regular basis should alternate two-to-three weeks on the supplement with one-to-two-weeks off of it to gain the full effects of the herbal supplement.
